Teaching by making recordings – Filmed using a DSLR Camera with Stand, Edited with Adobe After Affects and Adobe Express. Inspired by my Middle school art visit I wanted to learn more about how to record art making/process videos.

Using Tempera Paint to create a Stop Motion video

Creating assets for stop motion using tempera paint.

Here are some screenshots of what the application looks like and some of my process in creating additional affects such as the title, sound, sun rays and credits. The file you see with out the title was an attempt in taking photos directly from my phone to use in the application and the final animation was done after editing DSLR photos in Photoshop to make them all a the same size and lighting.

A stop motion animation using the mobil app, Stop Motion Studio. I found this app to be very simple and easy to use for beginners. you can record straight from your phone or import photos to edit as I did. The process for taking my photos took a long time because I had to paint each part and try to keep the placement the same with each frame. Actually putting the video together in the app was pretty seamless and quick. I like that you can add a title page and credits page as well as being able to make digital paint edits within the application. It was surprisingly easy to create a voice recording to accompany it as well. I looked into several different applications and software for creating a simple stop motion animation and I think this was the easiest and most user friendly. The only downside to this is that its a mobile application so may not be accessible as a teaching tool in some instances. I dont think you can do lighting or affects edits in this app so you may need to use a different application to edit any photos prior to importing.

Adobe After Affects

I started the process of importing and creating a stop motion animation using after affects but found that it was much more complicated of a process compared to using Stop Motion Studio or Photoshop for a simple animation like the one I was trying to create. I probably wouldn’t use this software for a project like this.

I Motion

I wasn’t even able to use this application because while it is advertised as free it requires you to have the paid, Pro, Version in order to use most of its features. I was unable to edit my work using this application. I found this to be the case with most other applications. Either limited to a specific device (apple vs Android) or requiring you to pay to use key features within the application. I would not use or recommend this application over the Stop Motion Studio app because even the features that were free were not as user friendly as the app that I used to create my final artwork.

Adobe PhotoShop

For comparison: Here is a Gif I made using Photoshop In a previous semester. Here I digitally painted each Frame then created a frame animation. While the process for creating and editing the animation takes longer in photoshop than when using an app like Stop Motion Studio, I did find that creating the digital drawings (frames) was faster and more accurate to my vision. I think it depends on the style and format that is most accessible to you in this instance.
